Alicia Keys
Her hit, Fallen, a single off of her debut album in 2001, helped to skyrocket her career
and garner her millions of fans worldwide. Since that time, she has not fell from being a
pop sensation. Alicia Keys wears the hats of singer, song writer, actress, producer, poet
and pianist. She is America's own, born in New York City, N.Y. Her life is an American
triumph. In the following paragraphs her triumph will be celebrated.
Keys rose from humble beginnings. She was raised by her mother. Her parents were
never married. Her father was not very much involved in her life while growing up.
Keys was a music prodigy. Early on her talent as a performer and as a musician was
obvious. She was cast in an episode of the "Cosby Show," when she was
five-years-old. She began taking piano lessons at the age of seven. Being an
exceptionally bright student, she mastered works of famous composers such as
Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin before turning 15-years-old. She attended the
Professional Performing Arts School for high school. Graduating at age 16, she was her
class valedictorian. She received a scholarship to Columbia University. Also at this
time, she became a signed artist to a major recording label, Columbia Records.
Attempting to do both, Keys found her recording schedule made school impossible and
she left college pursuing her music.
She was knocked down. After dropping out of college, Keys found that Columbia
Records was not going to be a smooth ride. She was unable to make a big hit. She
recorded music and still the world at large didn't know her name. Her resolve was
signing with Clive Davis', J Records label and recording the, Songs in A Minor, album
that went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide. She then went on to collect five Grammy
Awards for it in 2002.
Today, Alicia Keys is credited as selling over 28 million albums. Most of the work on her
albums are produced and written by her. Her albums to date include: "Songs in A
Minor," "The Diary of Alicia Keys," and "As I Am." She has become an actress with roles
in films such as , "Smokin Aces," "The Nanny Diaries" and "The Secret Lives of Bees."
She has written a book of poetry entitled, "Tears for Water."
